Do I need to be a licensed mental health professional or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist to take the training?
You do not need to be a licensed psychotherapist or mental health practitioner to benefit from this program. We have people from all walks of life and professional backgrounds who feel the call to bring the healing power of nature into their lives and work. Our students are: teachers, coaches, alternative healers, bodyworkers, wellness practitioners, spiritual directors and those in many other professions. The scope of our training does not qualify you to practice psychotherapy or to be a counselor, yet it does offer healing tools to blend with your current professional skills.

What is the difference between an “Ecotherapy certificate” and an “Ecotherapy certification”?
You will receive a certificate for the Level 1 and Level 2 trainings. Upon completion of Level 1-3 you will receive full certification, which is the highest level of Ecotherapy training we offer at our institute. Certifications are considered a more significant title than certificates in most states.

Level 1 Professional Online Ecotherapy Certificate Course is a dynamic, interactive forum that provides foundational concepts, skills and practice in the field of ecotherapy. You will learn clinical, earth-based practices to enrich your professional work with individuals and groups with the support of an earth-honoring cohort.

Level 2 Professional Ecotherapy Certificate Immersions are land-based training retreats located in stunning, natural settings with majestic trees and flowing creeks. You will replenish your body and spirit with the peace of nature, healthy and delicious meals, and the support of an Earth-honoring community. Our program offers a transformational experience of learning and practicing a rich mix of nature-based healing practices to use with individuals and groups, indoors or outdoors. It will support you to deepen your personal relationship with nature and to integrate Earth-based interventions into your work with confidence and skill.

Level 3 Advanced Ecotherapy Training & Certification is rooted in a decolonial framework, a core pillar of which is weaving the individual to the collective to support earth-rooted leadership and embodied activism-inspired Ecotherapy. Not only will you deepen essential ecotherapy skills and learn new potent practices, you will expand your capacity to articulate and address critical growing-edge issues of our time. You will feel deeply supported and prepared to take your empowered next steps both personally and professionally to bring your Ecotherapy offerings into the world.

How many hours a week is the commitment for the Level 1 training?
The amount of hours or the Level 1 training depends on your self-pacing and how much time you take with readings and assignments. However, estimate spending 6-8 hours/week: the live class (2 hours), recorded materials (1 hour), reading and commenting (2-3 hours), nature practices and assignments (1-2 hours), and buddy-time (1 hour).

What can I call myself when I finish the trainings?
Level 1 , 2 & 3 trainings:
We believe that you are qualified to offer beginning level ecotherapy after you successfully complete the Level 1 training, as you will have the foundational concepts and skills to practice it with integrity and awareness.

If you are a mental health professional, and will use Ecotherapy as one of your main modalities, you can say or advertise that you are an “ecotherapist”. You can also say that you “practice Ecotherapy” or have a specialty in Ecotherapy.

If you are outside of the mental health profession you can say that you “offer Ecotherapy practices” (if it is contextualized within their other professions, such as a coach, teacher, or alternative healer) You can say that you have “training in” or a “specialty in Ecotherapy”.  We caution you about using the term “ecotherapist”. If one is not licensed or a therapist in training, people might misinterpret that you are offering psychotherapy. Our training does not teach you to be a psychotherapist.

Possible titles for oneself: nature connection practitioner, nature connection teacher, earth-rooted coach, eco-wellness practitioner or nature guide. You can be creative with this so it speaks to you and your communities.

Are there national or international Ecotherapy Certification standards?
As of yet, there are no national or international boards of certification in Ecotherapy, but our 100-hour Certification program is fairly standard in the field, in terms of both hours and content. We are accredited by the American Psychological Association, and some Europeans have been able to get CE’s through their institutes. You can see the bottom of our Online Ecotherapy page for more information.

How is the BIPOC Online class different from the regular class?
The foundations of the training are consistent between the BIPOC and general level 1 training. Rather than eliminating content from the general Level 1 training, we’ve added content to the BIPOC training in order to support a deeper look at BIPOC relationships to land and healing. The learning objectives are different because of this and because they’ve been written to reflect more of the qualitative learning in the course.

Is the training facilitated by a BIPOC instructor? What is the price?
Yes, the training was developed and is taught by Niralli D’Costa (and soon Musenge Luchembe Hayslett), and you can find more about them at the bottom of the program page. We offer this course at an equity price that is listed on the registration page.

How do I sign up for a work study scholarship and what does it entail?
We usually have three work study positions for each Five-day Immersion Training. The main help we need is for set up and clean up for the meals. This takes 20-30 minutes and does not hinder you from attending any of the training sessions. There may be a few other small tasks needed during the training as well. You will receive a $200 refund for your help at the training. Please let us know which training you are interested in and email

Can I receive a scholarship throughout all of the Ecotherapy levels or throughout the whole Ecotherapy Certification process?
We can sometimes offer a partial scholarship throughout the Certification process. All scholarships are on a first come first serve basis and are limited at this time. We almost exclusively offer equity scholarships to Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) and LGBTQIA2S+. If you are interested, please fill out this form.

Do you have timing favorable to European time zones or other countries?
One to two times a year we offer a 10AM-12PM PST (UTC-8) timing or PDT (UTC-7) which is 6PM-8PM GMT (UTC-0) or 5PM-7PM (UTC-0) timing (depending on time of year) for the Level 1 online training.

What is your Refund Policy?
Level 1 training: Participants may withdraw from the training program within seven days after receiving the class access information and receive a 50% refund of the tuition. After this, no refund will be given.

Refund policies for Level 2 & 3, see bottom of their program pages.

What is your policy around Covid precautions, and in terms of testing and quarantining before the event?
As you know, the issues with Covid keep shifting around due to the variants, so we can’t be 100% sure what things will look like throughout the year.  Our thinking at this point, is that we want people to have a negative PCR test 48 hours before they arrive and in that 48 hours before the training to essentially quarantine from anyone who might come in contact with someone who may be infected. This gets tricky depending on if you have kids/partners and what their contacts are. Planes have shown to be pretty safe due to their filtering. We won’t ask you to do any quarantining once you arrive unless you develop symptoms. We may also have rapid tests for people to take when they arrive.

To provide the safest training possible, we prefer that people are fully vaccinated and boosted. However, we may consider non-vaccinated people with special circumstances. Please email if this is your situation and we will evaluate it.

Do you anticipate that people will be indoors unmasked together for parts of the training?
Last summer we were able to be unmasked indoors as we had the training right before the Delta vcame along, but later in the fall, we were outside 95% and used masks indoors. Outdoors we did a mix, depending on how close we were and we let folks have some choice around their comfort level.
